How To Shop For A Wedding Dress Like An Expert

PREPPING FOR WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING

Ah yes, Engagement Season is upon us, yes it IS a real thing. There is something so magical of saying yes under those twinkling holiday lights. Now that you've made the big announcement, it's time to start brainstorming for your wedding. In particular, shopping for a wedding dress. What should you expect, how should you prep, where should you shop? We have it all here for you.

Budget & Wedding date

The first two major factors in wedding dress shopping are your budget and wedding date. Your budget will guide you in on what price range of gowns to look at and try on. Wedding dress shopping should be a fun and enjoyable experience, so be open and try on a few gowns for the fun of it. Also, when calculating your budget make sure to include costs for alterations, taxes, and any accessories you wish to incorporate.

Secondly, finalizing the wedding date is a crucial factor in your wedding planning. Not wanting to settle with an off the rack gown, you will need to have this date in mind when placing the order for your gown. Realistically, we advise starting the shopping experience 8 to 10 months before the wedding. This will allow the needed three months time for dress production and any needed alterations. Also, your wedding date is a good guideline to what style will work best with the season.

Styles & Silhouettes

As we all day dream about the big day and how our wedding dress will look like, know there are many styles and dress silhouettes that will work wonders for you. No matter what designers and their designs you gravitate toward, research the web to see what type of gowns speak to you and have this information ready when you go for your bridal appointment. Compile a file with your favorite wedding dress styles will keep you focused and help the bridal consultant in recommending dresses to you.

Before the Shopping

A Ring On the Phone
Before you step foot into the store call in advance. Ask them if an appointment is needed to try on the dresses, many stores do require it. This is the perfect time to ask if they carry the designer you are looking for. Get informed about their payment process. Some stores require a deposit for gowns while others may ask for full payment. Also, ask about any alterations services, will it be included in the price and is the alteration done on site?

Sizing

Most stores carry a standard sample size of gowns, be sure to ask what that is. The reason is sizing for bridal gowns work differently than your average clothing sizes. Don't be surprised if your bridal gown size is 2 sizes larger than your regular dress size. Also, sizing will differ slightly from each designer. This is why fittings are so important and do expect to have about three separate sessions for that perfect fit.

Making A List Checking It Twice

Before going into seriouss shopping mode, make a list of local bridal boutiques that fits your requirements. Then book your appointments, as stores appreciate to set the needed time to meet with you. Most stores will have details of what you can expect in terms of how much time you have for your appointment, how many people you should bring, if young children are allowed and so on.

Know who you want there by your side when trying on the gowns. Having a smaller group with you can make it more focused and less stressful. If the store carries bridesmaids gowns take note and consider coming back at another time with your bridesmaids.

Booking appointments on the weekend might be the most convenient for you but it will also mean
more people trying to book the same day. We recommend choosing weekday mornings to fully enjoy the wedding dress shopping experience.

Dress to Impress
Be prepared for the shopping experience by having an idea of what shoes you will be wearing for your wedding. You may even bring them with you when doing a fitting. This will be crucial to any alterations done to the length of the dress. Wearing undergarments that can work well in any clothing is best. Opt for nude and strapless bra so that you can see the dress in it's best form.
We also suggest doing a light glam makeup so you can better envision the whole wedding day look. And of course be prepared to take tons of pictures and fun selfies.
